Steve Angello - Tiger

Steve Angello made a name for himself as one third of the hugely popular dance trio Swedish House Mafia. When the group, known for starry-eyed anthems such as “Don’t You Worry Child,” disbanded in 2013, he began work on his debut solo collection. 

Wild Youth, an autobiographical concept piece that follows a misguided, angsty teen through adulthood, dropped at the end of January to industry acclaim and positive commercial reception — it’s currently at No. 1 on the iTunes dance chart in over 40 countries. A highlight of the collection, “Tiger,” came together early in the recording process and guided the collection, remembers Angello. “[It] was the first song that I made for the album,” he tells EW, “along with the art direction and overall concept of the album. It was the mood color and creativity behind the start.”

EW can now exclusively premiere the video for the brooding song, set in a parallel (or not) reality. “Usually I create video concepts and art works before I actually work on the songs,” Angello says of his unique process. “I need a clear concept of the songs before I finalize it. This was created side-by-side and therefore the song had remained instrumental. The video is so intense and eventful that I didn’t have space for a feature. I let the video be the feature.” 

The fist-pumping positivity of SHM won’t be found on Youth, and “Tiger” is no exception. The brooding, expansive song sits heavy in your chest — and the video matches. Angello’s tracks are big enough that whole worlds fit inside them, and here it’s a dark one. “It’s very surreal realism, which I love to share. A little darker than most videos but so is the world.”
